1. Don't buy a PROTECTED TERRITORY. A great scissor sharpener does not need a protected territory. Besides that, Xzacta Shears gives you a protected territory of 25 miles from your home for 1 year. 2. Don't finance your scissor sharpening venture if at all possible. It can be a tough business the first year. HAIR STYLISTS DO NOT LIKE SCISSOR SHARPENERS BECAUSE MOST HAVE HAD VERY BAD EXPERIENCES. It takes awhile to gain trust.
3. Don't buy a scissor sharpening system that DOES NOT sharpen using only the outside of the pad. VERY BLUNTLY, IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO EVEN BEGIN TO REMOVE AN EVEN AMOUNT OF METAL ACROSS THE SCISSOR BLADE, THUS PRESERVING MANUFACTURED SPECIFICATIONS. Anyone that tells you any differently either doesn't know what they are talking about or is, very bluntly, not telling you the truth. While scissor sharpening on the outside of the pad is possible with some other system, it is extremely difficult, and hence is probably why it is not taught. And it is extremely difficult to do this free hand. Oh well, I told you so.
4. Don't buy a sytem that teaches you to start basic sharpening maintenance on "convex shears" with beveled sharpening movements. Most teach this way by the way. It is unnecessary and just wrong. The exception to this is when doing corrective work.
5. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE AN OUTSTANDING SCISSOR SHARPENER BY WATCHING A FEW VIDEOS AND/OR A DAY OR TWO OF TRAINING

7. Salon Scissor Sharpening is not an art, it is highly technical skill, and it is a different ball game from sharpening other implements. It is actually a plus if you have no sharpening experience. Bluntly speaking, most scissor sharpeners that have been sharpening shears for a long time can be very difficult to RE-TRAIN. We have to un-train them and this can be difficult for many folks. Change isn't easy...just ask Pres. Obama.
